HP Warms to HD DVD

Computer maker Hewlett-Packard, part of the group backing the future optical disc format called Blu-ray, said Thursday it may support the HD-DVD format if Blu-ray proponents don’t offer features available on the rival format like interactivity and technology for copying DVDs.
The development comes a month after HP asked Blu-ray backers to add some HD-DVD features to the format (see HP to Blu-ray: Add Features). Blu-ray is the next-generation DVD standard led by Sony, while HD-DVD technology is backed by Toshiba.
HP’s indication that it may no longer exclusively back Blu-ray could potentially be a blow to Sony in the battle over what format will become dominant in viewer homes. Considered the stronger contender, Blu-ray has experienced some recent setbacks.
